First Home in Cameron; Boyhood Home to Sul Ross

Year Marker Erected: 1969

Marker Location: Near Lions Centennial Park, Cameron, Texas

Marker Text: This historic marker commemorates the site of Cameron’s first home, built by Shapley P. Ross and later home to his son, L.S. "Sul" Ross, a Confederate general and Governor of Texas. Chosen for its abundant spring, this site was vital in Cameron’s early settlement. In 1890, a pavilion was added, hosting band concerts, community events, and in 1892, a notable gubernatorial debate. Although the original site is no longer part of Lions Centennial Park, the marker stands nearby, honoring Cameron’s rich history and Sul Ross’ legacy.
