First Girl’s Tomato Club in Texas

Year Marker Erected: 1983

Marker Location: Historic Milam County Jail, Cameron, Texas

Marker Text: This marker, located on the same property as the Historic Milam County Jail, commemorates the founding of Texas’ first Girl’s Tomato Club by Edna Westbrook Trigg in 1912. Trigg, a Milam County native and educator, taught young women farming and canning skills that laid the foundation for the 4-H program. These clubs inspired leadership and agricultural education, with members showcasing their work at fairs and using earnings to start college funds. Today, this marker celebrates Cameron’s role in agricultural education and honors Trigg’s lasting legacy.
